Day 1: Perth – Kalbarri

[ 600 km, 6.30h]

Lancelin Sand Dunes                        Pinnacles, Nambug National Park
Perth – Lancelin – Pinnacles (210km, ~2:30h)

Start you roadtrip in Perth and drive 1 and a half hours to Lancelin. Enjoy a day full of action when surfing on the sand dunes of Lancelin.  The beach right beside the sanddunes is very nice and with the free BBQ a great spot for lunch! Sandboard rental at the petrol station in Lancelin: 10$/h.

Later on, drive further north for 1 hour and you will arrive at Nambung National Park, where you can explore the mystic Pinnacles stone formations.

Pinnacles – Geraldton – Pink lake – Kalbarri (393km, 4.30h)

Follow the scenically beautiful “Indian Ocean Drive” which leads along the coastline.

Stop at the pretty town Geraldton. 40km south of Kalbarri on Gorge Grey Road is the Pink Lake. Thanks to the microscopic algae called Dunaliella Salina the water appears in a unique pink colour, depending on time and levels of the Beta Carotene. In Kalbarri Town you can find a nice campsite.

Day 2: Kalbarri National Park

You can spend the whole day exploring Kalbarri National Park. The park is located on the lower reaches of the Murchison River, which has cut magnificent red and white banded gorges for 80km, as it carves its way to the sea. There is much to see and do in the national park, you can marvel at the coastal cliffs, do a kayak tour through the river gorges or try out some of the trails and hikes.

Day 3 Kalbarri – Shell Beach – Monkey Mia

Wild Dolphins will come to Monkey Mia EVERY morning.

Shell Beach Conservation Park has a unique beach of tiny white shells up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 120 km.

For the night we recommend to stay at Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort in Denham. It is situated right on the beach where you can experience the unique wild dolphin feeding every morning.

Day 4 – Monkey Mia  & Francois Peron National Park

Monkey Mia Monkey Mia in the famous Shark Bay region is specially protected under the charter of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The dolphins of Monkey Mia are world famous for their ritual of swimming to shore to interact with humans. Seven dolphins frequently come to the beach and are followed by up to 20 others.

Day 5 & 6 – Monkey Mia – Coral Bay [580km, 6h]

Early morning, you will have another opportunity to come close to the friendly dolphins visiting the resort’s beach.  On the way to Coral, Bay you can visit the Carnavan Blow Holes and the Hamilton Pool.

Stay at least 2 nights at Coral Bay at the southern end of Ningaloo Reef, Australia’s second largest coral reef formation which is over 200 km long. You can reach this breathtaking reef just a few meters off the shore!! Its amazing!

Day 7 & 8: Exmouth & Cape Range National Park

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore the area – Ningaloo Marine Park is the largest marine park in Western Australia and it protects the fringing coral reef, a stunning underwater landscape of fish and corals located directly off the beach. When you are lucky you can spot turtles here.

This day is also perfect to do the famous ‘Swimmimg with the Whale Sharks’ Tour. Whale Sharks are really rare and the Ningaloo Reef is one of a few spots in there world where it is possible to spot Whalesharks. Its an amazing adventure to swim with these big, wild and overwhelming creatures.

Day 10 & 11 – Karijini National Park

The day is yours to discover the many facets of the stunningly beautiful Karijini National Park, the second largest in the state of Western Australia. Karijini protects many different wildlife habitats, landscapes, plants and animals of the Pilbara. Wildflowers vary with the seasons. Huge termite mounds are a feature of the landscape and rock piles of the rare pebble mound mouse may be found in spinifex country. You may wish to visit the local tourist bureau and obtain some up-to-date information on what is happening in the park. Expect impressive, deeply carved gorges, cool rock pools and fantastic vantage points when you embark on one of the walks in the National Park.

Day 12 – Broome (07/08/14)

The day is yours to enjoy! Relax,  recover from a long roadtrip. Broome’s attractions include its tropical climate, cosmopolitan character and world famous pearling industry. Visit restored luggers and the Japanese Cemetery for tales of the towns pearling history, then see today’s pearl on display in Chinatown. You might like to also take a camel ride down the famous 22 km Cable Beach [own cost]. Tours to Willie Creek Pearl Farm in Roebuck Bay are worth joining and can be booked locally [own cost]. Before checking out the town’s restaurant scene, why not take a stroll along world-famous Cable Beach, a perfect swimming beach on the shores of the Indian Ocean! There are even dinosaur footprints to be discovered at Ganthaume Point.

Day 13 – Broome – Kununurra / Lake Argyle (1.050km, 11 h)

On the way you pass Gelkle Gorge Conservation Park and Punululu.

Or if you have a 4 wheel drive you can take the unspoiled Gibb River Road.

Kununurra (a country town on the banks of the Ord River, which has been dammed into a huge storage lake). Relax at the amazing Infinitypool of Lake Argyle Caravan Park with a breathtaking view. Maybe spend some time shopping for Argyle diamonds or take a drive up to Kelly’s Knob and have a look at the fantastic view. We recommend to stay 1-2 nights at Lake Argyle Caravan Park

Day 15 – Katherine: Nitmiluk National Park with Kajak

You will see a number of quite differing parts of one of the country’s most impressive gorges, which is carved up to 70 m deep into the surrounding escarpment. The area is also of very high significance to the local Aboriginal people. Wet your appetite to the awe inspiring Nitmiluk Gorge with this enjoyable cruise past the Southern Rock hole and that famous cliff face – Jedda’s Rock. You can visit up to 13 other gorges on extended cruises.
